Having A Fit Over Your Fit?

Alright kids buckle your seatbelts because this one’s going to be a little long. But I wanted to thoroughly walk you through my process of choosing an outfit and paint a clear picture for you guys so please enjoy!
I believe that raves are the absolute best place to express yourself and be 100% authentically you. I think that the limits on rave fashion are virtually nonexistent and that you can wear whatever you want and express yourself however you chose. I honestly have so much more confidence in what I wear when it comes to raves, and I think they are the best place to try that trend or outfit you love but are too scared to wear normally. Although that being said, no matter how many festivals and raves I attend I always struggle for WEEKS to find the perfect outfit. Choosing an outfit is hard for me because I’m a very picky person and struggle to find things I like. With every festival I try to wear new outfits, styles, or trends that I haven’t done before. I always approach planning an outfit for a festival or rave in the same way.

First, I start by choosing a color, theme or particular look I want to go for. Things such as; doing an all-pink look, neon, sparkly, or matching the theme of the festival. For example, for New Year’s 2019 I attended Countdown and since it was NYE my goal was to SPARKLE. So my entire look for Countdown was based on NYE and embracing the glitter. I went for an all-silver outfit and accessories and anything that shined. Another example is for Beyond Wonderland this year the theme was Alice In Wonderland -which is one of my favorite movies- so naturally, my outfits were put together with that theme in mind. I chose pieces that resembled the White Rabbit for day one (white velvet bottoms with pink ties, a pink top, pink leg wraps, and my hair in braids to give the look of “ears”), and Alice for day two (blue sparkly bottoms, a white top with lace detail, blue leg wraps and black bow).
For more normal festivals that don’t have a clear-cut theme (like EDC or HARD Summer), I try to stick with a color or general theme for each day and plan an outfit around that. I usually start by finding a piece I really like and basing the rest of my outfit off of that or finding pieces in the color I was thinking and going from that point. For example, this year for HARD my theme for day one was neon pink and matching it with black. With this outfit, I had found neon pink mesh bike shorts that I absolutely LOVED and ended up planning the rest of my outfit around it. My day two outfit was the exact same scenario. I found these stunning black mesh rhinestone bike shorts that I absolutely loved and then planned an all-black outfit around them.

Now EDC is a different ball game because planning three completely different outfits is a lot more work than one or two. When I started looking for outfits for EDC I slowly put together three outfit ideas to aim for. I knew I wanted my outfits to each be one of those three ideas so I that I had a variety for all three days. The three looks I based my outfit search around were: a bodysuit with keyhole middle, a matching two-piece outfit, and some sort of pattered bottoms with a wrap top. Narrowing down what concept I knew I wanted and what outfit I wanted to go for definitely helped me to find outfits once I knew I wanted to fit a specific idea. I liked the idea of a bodysuit because I had never worn one to a rave before, and thought it would be a perfect way to separate the two-piece outfits.

My second step when it comes to putting together an outfit is choosing accessories, glitter, and face gems that match it. As I mentioned before I love all things glitter. So I always add glitter and face jewels to every outfit because I think they really complete the look. I always try to highlight the colors in my outfit. For example, for Countdown I had silver glitter, and silver star-themed face and body jewels. If my outfit is pink I will find pink face gems and matching pink glitter. Another accessory I really think ties outfit together is having bottom accessories. Things such as fishnets, leg wraps, garters, PVC skirts, etc. I think really add emphasis to an outfit. I personally do not wear fishnets. I absolutely love how they look and wish I could tolerate them but they’re too difficult for me and I always end up ripping them. So my go-to has always been leg wraps! I LOVE them. I really think they add that extra pop an outfit needs.

But while I love leg wraps, I knew I couldn’t do that for all three days of EDC, and I knew this was my opportunity to try a new look. For each outfit of EDC, I had a different bottom accessory. For day one I had separate individual leg garters, for day two I had a strappy garter belt with attached leg garters, and day three I had my ever trusty leg wraps. I think these different accessories were a great way to distinguish each outfit and change it up, and offer the extra pop they needed, without being too repetitive. The last extra-touch accessories I look for are things the I think will add that little missing touch. Things like a cute choker, or funky sunglasses and of course always adding my kandi.
My final step in completing my outfit is by far the easiest. The shoes. I have a designated pair of rave shoes that I wear to every festival and they go perfect with every outfit. My go-to rave shoes are white combat boots. They’re perfect because they’re comfortable, they go with everything, and you can easily wipe dirt off of them. If you’re struggling with what shoes you should wear I highly recommend choosing some that are comfortable, and that you can reuse for future events. It’s a bonus if you can find shoes that are not canvas or cloth because they’re much easier to clean.
I think that you should absolutely wear whatever you want and whatever makes you feel good! If there is any place to go all out or try something new it’s at a rave. Please feel free to experiment with new looks and styles, embrace a trend, or rock those pasties you’ve been too scared to wear. Don’t be afraid to wear what you want, just be yourself because this is the perfect place to express yourself. When planning an outfit just make sure that it’s going to be comfortable, functional, and most importantly the you’re going to love it and be confident!
While I know this has been a lot, my outfit process is somewhat time-consuming but I hope this has helped in some way or given you a different way of approaching planning your festival outfits!
