Since I started interning I think that I have personally learned and grown a lot. Working in a professional setting and getting hands-on experience is much different than sitting in a classroom listening to your teacher lecture. I believe everyone should intern before they graduate. It is a good way to find out what you may or may not like, to get real experience working for a business and to gain more knowledge about the industry.
I am currently interning at a swimwear company as a writing and journalism intern. This internship has been extremely beneficial to me because I would love to work in fashion journalism in the future, and this is the perfect head start. Since it is a small independently run business, this experience has been extremely eye-opening. I have not only learned beneficial skills for my future career but I have also learned what is required to successfully run and maintain a business. In my internship, I have done everything from writing blog posts to helping set up and optimize their website.
One of the most beneficial things that I have learned is what is required when writing for a company and a website. Since I hope to go into writing in the future, learning these skills and information is extremely beneficial to me. I learned how to optimize a blog post for search engine optimization, and what is necessary to rank higher in Google search. I also learned how to format, edit, and create content for blog posts. I learned how to create original blog covers using the website Canva, which is an extremely useful skill as Canva is a very popular and widely used website.
Additionally, I learned what goes into running and maintaining a website. I got very lucky in this case, as the company I work for has been in the process of transitioning websites, so I got to see first hand what is required when setting up a website. I assisted in many different areas in setting up the new website. I wrote descriptions and explanations for products, making sure all images had meta-tags and created an e-mail pop-up for the website. All in all, I think that this internship has been extremely beneficial to me. I have learned a great deal, from working in a professional setting and collaborating with others, to understand what goes into a successful business website. I am excited to see what else I am going to learn before my internship is over, and I am looking forward to my future employment opportunities.
